Carbon Offset Ticket
30-12-2020 10:00 – 31-12-2020 12:00
Each year the NUMC drives around the country on many adventures and this year we have decided to try and offset our carbon emissions by donating to an offset charity.  On each event description there will be link to this event, giving every member the option to help to offset our emmisions across the year.  A $3 ticket is enough to offset the carbon emissions of an average NUMC trip* through the 'Carbon Neutral Charitable Fund'. At the end of the year there will be a prize of a free trip ticket for whoever has bought the most offset tickets!   *based on the mean distance travelled on trips in 2019

Landcare, swimming holes and scenery, could this be the perfect trip? Hunter Intrepid Landcare has been contacted about clearing Cape Ivy (Delairea odorata) and False Capsicum (Solanum pseudocapsicum) from a site on the edge of the beautiful Mount Royal National Park and need some mountaineering muscle to get the job done! We will be meeting at the gear shed (around the back of the forum at Callaghan) https://goo.gl/maps/rMk2aLHi537bEVMWA at 8 am on Saturday and driving up to the property (about 2 hours drive).  We will spend the day helping the landowner remove the invasive weeds, have a dip to cool off and the night having a few drinks around the campfire. On Sunday we have the option to do an early morning birdspotting walk and then either continue doing landcare or go for a short hike (or both) depending on enthusiasm levels before we drive back on Sunday afternoon. Tools will be provided by Hunter Intrepid Landcare. Make sure you bring: Warm clothes for at night (it will be more chilly up there than in Newcastle!) Food (Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, Sunday lunch and plenty of snacks!) Drink bottle and ALL of the water for the weekend (3L per person, per day) Sunscreen and a hat Long, sturdy pants for bush bashing Sensible footwear (boots/running shoes) Tent or spot in a tent (the club has tents we can use) Sleeping bag and mat (club has plenty of both) Cutlery, plate, bowl, cup, etc Swimmmers Due to COVID we ask that you do not attend if: You are awaiting a COVID-19 test result You have been in contact with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 in the last 14 days You have been interstate or in contact with someone who was interstate in the last 14 days You have been overseas in the last 14 days You have or have had ANY infectious disease in the last 14 days (dealing with other illnesses increases the risk of having serious complications from COVID-19) You are immuno-compromised or have contact with anyone who is immuno-compromised If you would like to offset your carbon emissions from all the driving check out our tree planting scheme http://thq.fyi/se/28jhiHY Any questions feel free to contact me at  0431757089 or ptin265@aucklanduni.ac.nz - Captain Phil

Wetlands Cleanup by Canoe
Hunter wetlands centre
10:00 – 15:00
Come and join us to clean up the Hunter Wetlands along Ironbark Creek. We will be using canoes to paddle along the creek collecting rubbish. During a recent survey Clean4Shore estimated several tonnes of rubbish in the mangrove environment around nearby Kooragang Island so we expect there to be plenty to clear out at Ironbark Creek.  As a reward for your hard work (as if the warm fuzzies of saving the environment aren't enough!) we'll have free catering to keep you sustained. No experience is necessary and we will provide all the paddling equipment and some gardening gloves to protect yourself from sharp rubbish. You will need to bring clothes and shoes you don't mind getting wet (it will be muddy), as well as plenty of water and sunscreen.  If you would like to reduce the carbon footprint of driving to/from the trip check out our carbon offset initiative! http://tdy.cl/se/28jhiHY We will have hand sanitiser available for all and we ask that you all check https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates to ensure you have not been to any of the hot spots. More info around COVID safety will be emailed to you before the trip. Please do not attend if: you have been overseas, in Victoria or at any of the hot spots in the last 14 days you are feeling unwell (any illness, not just flu-like symptoms) you are awaiting a COVID-19 test result you have had a positive COVID-19 result in the last 14 days Any questions contact me on facebook or at ptin265@aucklanduni.ac.nz - Captain Phil

Warrumbungles National Park hiking and stargazing weekend
Warrumbungle National Park
16-10-2020 16:00 – 18-10-2020 22:00
Come join us explore the Warrumbungles National Park and stargaze at night. The Warrumbungles is home to some unique and amazing rock formations, as it was once the inside of a volcano. Millions of years of erosion has revealed these rock formations which were previously deep underground. What remains of this volcano are towers and walls of dried magma (lava), they include The Breadknife – a thin but tall wall of rock standing straight up in the air. This trip is day hikes, returning to our cars and campsite at night time; so no need for a big and uncomfortable hiking pack. We will hike up to the aptly named ‘Grand High Tops’ on Saturday. On Sunday a shorter hike before driving back to Uni. The hiking plan is flexible, depending on what people want to do. Stargazing will also be on the cards, unless its cloudy….... The stars are quite a sight in the Warrumbungles, it was designed as a ‘dark sky’ park, meaning that the lights of civilisation have been minimised to allow the stars to shine as brightly as possible. A Space Observatory has been built nearby to utilise these clear skies. We will also be in a great spot to observe the ‘Orionids’ meteor shower which is occurring in October this year. A moderate level of fitness is required, but you don’t need to be properly fit or experienced in bushwalking. We will be walking for most of the day on Saturday (with breaks) and there are some steep sections. We will leave Friday afternoon 4-5pm from the NUMC gear store at Callaghan campus, drive 5 hours to the campsite. On Saturday and Sunday we will hike and return Sunday night 5-8pm. Equipement Required: Camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mat, torch, stove) Warm clothes (windproof shell, jacket, thermals, beanie) Hiking clothes (shirt, shorts, hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, daypack) At least 2L water Food for Saturday (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks) and Sunday (breakfast, lunch and snacks) Camera (optional) The club can supply: tents sleeping bags mattresses (but BYO if you want more comfort) torches daypacks You will need to bring clothing for cold and hot, we are far from the ocean so temperatures vary more. Expect temperatures between 8 and 30 C, it can also get windy on top of the mountains so prepare for wind-chill. Sun protection is a must. You also need to supply you own food, i will send out food suggestions closer to the time. You can combine with other people for your meals if you want. Alcohol consumption is accepted but you dont want to be hiking hungover, take my word for it. The campsite has: toilets, showers, BBQs we can cook on, drinking water. We are carpooling there, if you can drive and can volunteer your car please buy one of the 'driver' tickets. You will be reimbursed for car running costs during the trip. If you have any questions, post them on the NUMC facebook post or send me a Facebook message or email benjamin.w.fleming@uon.edu.au

NUMC AGM 2020
18:00 – 20:00
Alrighty my adrenaline junkies, time for the actual deets for our AGM! Our 2020 AGM will be held on zoom to avoid COVID-19 restrictions. We will be starting at 6:00 pm on Sunday 11th of October. The actual meeting should only take about 15-20 minutes. We have received some interest for committee positions, but will continue to accept nominations until midnight Saturday 10th. Any positions that remain vacant as of then will be open to nomination at the event. So grab your (free) ticket from tidyHQ so we can get a firm idea of numbers.  Reasons to nominate for committee: - Implement ideas you've had for the club - Learning admin and leadership skills - Open access to the gear store - In house training in outdoor adventure sports - Altruism - Looks great on your CV. Role descriptions and nomination forms are available on the club facebook page or by request. Any questions can be sent to myself or committee@numc.org.au. Our committees are run in a very fluid way, each member gets to learn every job, so your learning will not be confined to any single aspect of club administration. You will learn both the administrative skills of how to plan a trip, as well as the technical skills required to implement one. Nominate for any position you feel you would like to learn, or be good at. You may nominate for more than one. We'd love to have some new committee members, we have so much to teach and share so that this great club can thrive for years to come! Give it some thought, check it out. It is so worth it. I hope to see you all there! Zoom link: https://uonewcastle.zoom.us/j/86328232398 Phillip Tingle President NUMC ptin265@aucklanduni.ac.nz
