Pulse Climbing Night 26 October
Pulse Climbing
17:00 – 21:00
PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO RESERVE TWO TICKETS. ONE PER PERSON ONLY! Due to COVID-19 restrictions we are having to change the way we climb.  For now we have to make sure we do not bring too many people and that we comply with all requests from Pulse staff and the club to ensure everyone's safety. As such we will be splitting those coming to Pulse social climbing nights into two groups of no more than 30 each. Please get your free ticket to book your spot and please only come at the time you have got a ticket for. If there are too many people Pulse may have to ask some to leave so it is imperative that we all stick to our times. Please only get one ticket and be prepared to have to leave at the end of your allotted session if the gym is busy so that new people can come in.  We ask that you do not attend if: You are awaiting a COVID-19 test result You have been in contact with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 in the last 14 days You have been in Victoria or in contact with someone who was in Victoria in the last 14 days You have been overseas in the last 14 days You have or have had ANY infectious disease in the last 14 days (dealing with other illnesses increases the risk of having serious complications from COVID-19) You are immuno-compromised or have contact with anyone who is immuno-compromised I know some of these may sound harsh but if there is even one positive case because of us climbing will be shut down immediately, do not ruin it for the rest of us! Additionally we all need to make sure we continue to: Sanitise our hands between climbs Sanitise carabiners at every change over Do not share personal equipment Cough/sneeze into elbows or preferably a tissue instead of on your hands followed by washing/sanitising the coughed on area immediately Keep 1.5m away from each other Comply with limits to how many people in each area (20 in boulder area, 8 upstairs, etc) - these are all labelled Comply with staff instructions - if you do not you will be asked to leave the gym and possibly the club, this is a serious matter with serious consequences for the safety of individuals, the accountability of the club and Pulse I look forward to seeing 29 other people there, stay safe, have fun and climb well!

Warrumbungles National Park hiking and stargazing weekend
Warrumbungle National Park
16-10-2020 16:00 – 18-10-2020 22:00
Come join us explore the Warrumbungles National Park and stargaze at night. The Warrumbungles is home to some unique and amazing rock formations, as it was once the inside of a volcano. Millions of years of erosion has revealed these rock formations which were previously deep underground. What remains of this volcano are towers and walls of dried magma (lava), they include The Breadknife – a thin but tall wall of rock standing straight up in the air. This trip is day hikes, returning to our cars and campsite at night time; so no need for a big and uncomfortable hiking pack. We will hike up to the aptly named ‘Grand High Tops’ on Saturday. On Sunday a shorter hike before driving back to Uni. The hiking plan is flexible, depending on what people want to do. Stargazing will also be on the cards, unless its cloudy….... The stars are quite a sight in the Warrumbungles, it was designed as a ‘dark sky’ park, meaning that the lights of civilisation have been minimised to allow the stars to shine as brightly as possible. A Space Observatory has been built nearby to utilise these clear skies. We will also be in a great spot to observe the ‘Orionids’ meteor shower which is occurring in October this year. A moderate level of fitness is required, but you don’t need to be properly fit or experienced in bushwalking. We will be walking for most of the day on Saturday (with breaks) and there are some steep sections. We will leave Friday afternoon 4-5pm from the NUMC gear store at Callaghan campus, drive 5 hours to the campsite. On Saturday and Sunday we will hike and return Sunday night 5-8pm. Equipement Required: Camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mat, torch, stove) Warm clothes (windproof shell, jacket, thermals, beanie) Hiking clothes (shirt, shorts, hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, daypack) At least 2L water Food for Saturday (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks) and Sunday (breakfast, lunch and snacks) Camera (optional) The club can supply: tents sleeping bags mattresses (but BYO if you want more comfort) torches daypacks You will need to bring clothing for cold and hot, we are far from the ocean so temperatures vary more. Expect temperatures between 8 and 30 C, it can also get windy on top of the mountains so prepare for wind-chill. Sun protection is a must. You also need to supply you own food, i will send out food suggestions closer to the time. You can combine with other people for your meals if you want. Alcohol consumption is accepted but you dont want to be hiking hungover, take my word for it. The campsite has: toilets, showers, BBQs we can cook on, drinking water. We are carpooling there, if you can drive and can volunteer your car please buy one of the 'driver' tickets. You will be reimbursed for car running costs during the trip. If you have any questions, post them on the NUMC facebook post or send me a Facebook message or email benjamin.w.fleming@uon.edu.au

NUMC AGM 2020
18:00 – 20:00
Alrighty my adrenaline junkies, time for the actual deets for our AGM! Our 2020 AGM will be held on zoom to avoid COVID-19 restrictions. We will be starting at 6:00 pm on Sunday 11th of October. The actual meeting should only take about 15-20 minutes. We have received some interest for committee positions, but will continue to accept nominations until midnight Saturday 10th. Any positions that remain vacant as of then will be open to nomination at the event. So grab your (free) ticket from tidyHQ so we can get a firm idea of numbers.  Reasons to nominate for committee: - Implement ideas you've had for the club - Learning admin and leadership skills - Open access to the gear store - In house training in outdoor adventure sports - Altruism - Looks great on your CV. Role descriptions and nomination forms are available on the club facebook page or by request. Any questions can be sent to myself or committee@numc.org.au. Our committees are run in a very fluid way, each member gets to learn every job, so your learning will not be confined to any single aspect of club administration. You will learn both the administrative skills of how to plan a trip, as well as the technical skills required to implement one. Nominate for any position you feel you would like to learn, or be good at. You may nominate for more than one. We'd love to have some new committee members, we have so much to teach and share so that this great club can thrive for years to come! Give it some thought, check it out. It is so worth it. I hope to see you all there! Zoom link: https://uonewcastle.zoom.us/j/86328232398 Phillip Tingle President NUMC ptin265@aucklanduni.ac.nz

Picnic Paddle
Belmont
09:00 – 15:00
Why not come and give paddling a go! We will use the club canoes to gently paddle from Belmont to the small islands near Swansea. For those of you who have not been there before Swansea has a collection of small sandy islands which look like you are somewhere in New Caledonia. We'll be stopping on one of the islands for a 'bring your own picnic'. Remember to bring lunch and a snack or two. The club will provide: - canoes  - paddles - lifejackets You need to bring: - swimwear to paddle in - Recommend a T-shirt and shorts to avoid extreme sunburn - Shoes (thongs, sandels) - water - sunscreen/hat/sunglasses - Lunch and snacks Meet 9am at the gear shed to ensure everyone has the correct gear.  The paddle should take about 30 minutes to an hour each way so a small-moderate level of fitness is recommended (if you can walk across campus without needing a sit down you should be okay!) and there will be the possibility of falling out of your canoe so being able to swim at least ten metres is necessary. Other than that the only requirement is excitement!  Any questions please contact me at ptin265@aucklanduni.ac.nz or 0431757089 - Captain Phil

Morna Point
07:30 – 16:00
Interested to try climbing (or try climbing outdoors)? Desperate to touch some real rocks? It's time for BEGINNER CLIMBING! This crag is tide dependent, so we'll aim to be walking in around 8:30 am, as the tide is on it's way out. Anna Bay and One Mile Beach are some really nice spots up near Nelson Bay, so the trip is worth it even before the climbing! We'll be climbing in a spot that overlooks the water, with a beautiful beach on our walk back from the crag to the cars, so pack your swimmers! There is about a kilometre (~0.6mi) walk between the car park and the crag, plus some scrambling around the headland, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. There is also a small downclimb to enter the crag, we'll have people on hand to assist, but you must have a reasonable level of confidence navigating short rock scrambles. To join this trip you have to A) be a member of the club, and B) have purchased a ticket for the event, which pays for fuel and some gear maintainence.  This trip caters to all skill levels, we supply all the technical equipment and the training you need! What To Bring: - Food and Water for a day -Hat and sunscreen -Sturdy shoes -Hair ties for anyone with long hair.   -Swimmers and towel Transportation will be by way of a car pool, fuel for which is included in your ticket price. Please be at the gear store, located near the cul-de-sac around the back of the Forum gym ("Newcastle University Mountaineering Club" on Google maps) NO LATER THAN 7:30 AM SHARP to make sure everyone has the correct gear. PLEASE DON'T BE LATE WE WILL LEAVE WITHOUT YOU! Follow this link for a video from a previous beginner trip to Morna Point, it's worth it even just for the location https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oqExv0i6vo. These trips traditionally fill up very quickly, so get in ASAP to secure your spot!
