The Newcastle University Mountaineering Club is a network of adventure-minded people who love nature, the outdoors, and adventure sports! NUMC facilitates this passion, providing climbing, caving, bushwalking and camping trips, as well as seasonal canyoning trips and social BBQ nights. We also provide a weekly climbing night for our members, which will this year take place at Pulse Climbing Gym in Warners Bay on Wednesday nights & Adamstown on Friday nights, and provide a networking opportunity with other passionate mountaineers. 

Pulse Climbing Nights

Each Wednesday at Pulse Warners Bay, and Friday at Pulse Adamstown we run two separate climbing sessions, 5:30-7:30, then 7:30-9:30. Tickets are purchased directly through Pulse climbing and are $8. The link to purchase the Pulse tickets is included in your membership email. There are 20 tickets available for each session but get in fast, they sell out quickly!
 

Our Trips

Climbing
Our climbing trips range from beginner to advanced with a range of top roping, bouldering, lead climbing and trad climbing. Come along to our climbing trips to learn tips and tricks from our experienced climbers and experience the joy of overcoming vertical challenges!

Canyoning
Love the sound of abseiling down a waterfall or cliff jumping, all whilst taking in the glorious view of Australian Canyons?
Each year we run a range of canyoning trips, wet or dry & beginner to advanced, from October - April. 
Our wonderful trip leaders run abseiling upskilling sessions and will teach you what you need to know on our beginner canyoning trips!

Hiking
Like to earn your way to a good view?
Each semester we run a range of hiking trips from beginner to advanced and single to multi-day hikes.
Many of our hikes take place in the Blue Mountains, Central Coast or Port Stephens. 

Caving
Love obstacles or indoor climbing?
Check out our epic caving trips ranging from beginner to intermediate experience.
In the caves, explorers navigate their way through cave systems and manoeuvre and climb their way through challenges and squeezes. 
Across the caves, you will find fossils, crystal chambers and incredible rock structures. 

Social Events
Do you love to camp? Or are you keen to meet new people who appreciate a challenge and love the outdoors?
Come along to one of our social camps or events!

Our trips don't just stop there!
We also run snow trips, mountain biking, bike packing, snorkelling, and kayaking. 
If you have any trip ideas of your own hit up our committee and organise some trips!

All club-organised trips will be advertised through the Facebook group, with tickets purchased under the "Events" tab on our website, numc.org.au.

 

Memberships

Our membership fee is $55 which includes access to all events.
The membership runs from January-January each year. 

How to sign up....
Current students are automatically sign-up to Nusport and only need to sign-up for a membership through our website.
Memberships can be purchased through TidyHQ although to gain access you will need to make an account, it's free!
Below you can purchase your 2026 membership. Fill in the information, read the waiver and make the payment!

Alumni or students who study at other universities, in addition to the steps for current students, will also need to pay for a $65 NUsport membership. Please contact the committee in order to sort out your NUsport membership before you purchase an NUMC membership.

For new members with no uni affiliations, you will need to pay for a $90 Nusport membership then sign-up to TidyHQ following the instructions under current students. Please contact the committee in order to sort out your NUsport membership before you purchase an NUMC membership.

Gear Store

For a small fee, you can hire camping and hiking equipment, packs, tents, sleeping bags, mats and stoves to take on your travels, as well as all the kit required to attend one of our advertised trips! The Gearstore is located under the Forum.

LET’S GO CAVING…  If you have been wanting to try caving or are experienced and want a weekend escape into the abyss, this is the trip for you. We have heaps of places for you guys to come out to Timor Caves, in Geawegal Country. When: 9th October. The plan is to leave at 5PM on Friday, set up camp and hang around the campfire and then wake up bright and early Saturday to cave the day away before leaving for home in the arvo.  What: Now this is the fun part. First, we make our way to the caves which will be a short (or long) walk depending on how good you are at finding the damn things. Second, we put on our helmets, switch on our torches and dive into the underground world of rock, darkness and awesomeness. Once inside we walk, crawl, slide, and swear our way through the tunnels, trying to see what we can find and where we can get. It’s the ultimate in terms of exploration, the only thing stopping you from finding out what’s around the corner or in that tunnel is you. If you are claustrophobic, this is not the trip for you. We're aiming to get through 2-3 caves in the area over the day; all caves will be optional though and if you don’t feel like caving all day you're welcome to stay at camp.  Skills: This is a beginner trip so no prior experience of caving is required! However a reasonable level of fitness is needed as there will be 10-15 minute walks to most of the caves. What to bring: - 1 lunch and 1 breakfast. Dinner will be provided on Friday night. Saturday's dinner will be on the road, but likely a pub feed with everyone together.  - Water for one day (at least one litre in a sturdy or plastic bottle, each car will have a 10 or 20 litre water container for refills, but you NEED a bottle) - Clean clothes for the car ride home - Camping gear (can be borrowed from the NUMC gear store or BYO) - Torches (can be borrowed or BYO) ***Head torch ESSENTIAL*** - Overalls (optional) - Spare batteries (Club torches take 4 AAA or 4 AA batteries, you MUST have a complete spare set.) ***ESSENTIAL*** - Backup torch (a $5 hand torch is fine) ***ESSENTIAL*** - Helmets (Gear store) - Sturdy and/or cheap shoes. Following the “they gon’ get dirty” theme. (You get the point by now, there is dirt. Everywhere. Like, EVERYWHERE. And also water. Water and dirt make mud. You get the picture.) - Wet wipes/baby wipes recommended - Cheap gardening gloves (Also highly recommended) - Face masks (these caves are DUSTY) For additional information, feel free to flick me a message. Once you've got your ticket, make sure to be at the gear store by 5PM AT THE LATEST on Friday the 9th of October for our departure at 5:00PM.  Camping gear can be borrowed prior, it's a first-in-first-served system.  That's all from us, get keen and sign up, Cant wait to see you all there! Hey everyone! Weathers warming up so let's make a splash and dive in at fly point for a snorkel! Snorkel gear is available to hire (wetsuit, snorkel and fins) or feel free to BYO gear! The 411: Meet at the club shed at 9:30AM, location here https://maps.app.goo.gl/dNHChgfPfUuVJ3QJ9, We'll organise carpooling and then head to fly point in nelsons bay (https://maps.app.goo.gl/6dYYDFDxn84DpQW79), ticketed parking is available out front for $5 per hour or free parking is available a short walk away here (https://maps.app.goo.gl/XjBjwK7pVrivJFMy7) or here (https://maps.app.goo.gl/pgYf11uzRnqY1Exo9). Our 2026 AGM will be held at the Callaghan campus in the UNSA Clubs Room (ground level of the Shortland Building) on Thursday the 22nd. If you are unable to attend in person feel free to join on zoom through the link (the link will be emailed the day before to everyone who gets tickets) The AGM itself will be held from 6:30-7:30pm. The actual meeting should only take about 30 minutes. We have received some interest for committee positions, but will continue to accept nominations until midnight Wednesday 21st. Any positions that remain vacant as of then will be open to nomination at the event. So grab your (free) ticket from tidyHQ so we can get a firm idea of numbers.  Reasons to nominate for committee: - Implement ideas you've had for the club - Learning admin and leadership skills - Open access to the gear store - In house training in outdoor adventure sports - Help give back to the club so others can have the opportunity to gain something too - Altruism - Looks great on your CV. Role descriptions and nomination forms are available on the club facebook page or by request. Any questions can be sent to myself or committee@numc.org.au. Our committees are run in a very fluid way, each member gets to learn every job, so your learning will not be confined to any single aspect of club administration. You will learn both the administrative skills of how to plan a trip, as well as the technical skills required to implement one. Nominate for any position you feel you would like to learn, or be good at. You may nominate for more than one.
