GET KEEN! For semester 2 we are taking our social camp to the next level with NUMC's first battle of the Mountaineers! Two teams will battle it out with fun and challenging games, including capture the flag, a scav hunt and a bunch of rope-based challenges. Each team will be fighting to score their team beer, will take home mass amounts of bragging rights and dodge clean-up duty for Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast ;)  For those of you who like to ease your way into the semester.... there will also be plenty of time to chill out, eat food, have a beer, and mess around by the fire. There are lots of spots for hammocks and slack-lines so if you have any, I recommend bringing them along. Camp chairs are also encouraged! If you're new to the club or are looking to make new friends, this event is for you!  We look forward to seeing you there! - Kenz & Lilly    Important deets: There will be limited tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags. It will be first in, first served. It is really important that we get enough drivers for this trip so if you have a car please consider purchasing a driver ticket.... fuel will be reimbursed! Are you interested in climbing but never given it a go? Are you tired of greasy plastic holds at the gym? This the the perfect introductory trip to try outdoor climbing, learn some new skills, meet new people and have fun. No prior climbing experience is needed. The plan is to leave at the Gear shed (behind the Forum) Saturday morning and head down to Mount York on Darug Country. Saturday will be spent learning fundamental skills for safe rock climbing as well as plenty of time on the wall. We'll be staying at Mount York campground Saturday night, Blue Mountains gets real chilly at night in Winter so make sure you've got warm stuff. Then on Sunday we'll climb in some different areas and continue to build climbing skills, before heading back to Newcastle Sunday evening. What to bring: Food (Dinner will be provided Saturday night. You'll need to bring your own food for breakfast, lunches, and snacks. Don't underestimate how hungry you might get.) Water (Make sure you can carry enough water for the day, about 2L or so) Sun protection (This is very necessary as we'll be in the sun a lot) Clothes for two days (The Blue Mountains can get suprisingly cold) Camping gear (The club has camping gear available, however this is limited so please bring your own if you can) If you have any questions feel free to contact me via Facebook messenger or email: chriskirkman01@gmail.com

Mount Solitary
10-06-2023 07:00 – 12-06-2023 21:00
No friends? No plans over the Kings Birthday public holiday? Good at putting one foot in front of the other? That's why we're putting together an epic three day hike through the Mount Solitary track! First it'll involve bashing past tourists at Katoomba kiosk before descending into Federal Pass. After pitching tents at Ruined Castle campground, we'll scramble up the rock formations where we'll watch the sunset and talk about our feelings. The next day we will soar through Korowal Knife Edge like a majestic wedge tail eagle. Just kidding, it'll be 5 hours of prime time WrestleMania up the western ridge of Mount Solitary. There we'll be rewarded with amazingball views of Jamison Valley. If we're lucky, we'll get to see the aforementioned eagles soaring through the valley thermals. We will then descend from the eastern ridge of Solitary down into Kedumba River campground. After pitching tents for the night, lyrebirds will then serenade us into a well earned slumber and we will dream of a cold pint and hot schnitty at the pub. For the third day, Jamison and Leura Falls creeks will pass us by as we wander through Leura forest and into the rainforest gully known as Fern Bower. Two waterfalls will cool us down before we make a final ascent up to Katoomba. We will drive back to Newcastle and resolve to make more friends. While we welcome all friendless/socially inept, this is an intermediate hike. Therefore some hiking experience and physical fitness is a prerequisite. Your ticket includes gear hire for the weekend and transport to and from the Blue Mountains. If you have any questions please email a.wong45789@gmail.com. I would much rather you ask now rather than on the trail. I will smite you with all the might of Asgard if the latter happens 🥰

Trip Planning Evening
Newcastle University Mountaineering Club
18:00 – 20:00
Want to learn how to plan and run club trips? Have Ideas for a club trip that you'd love to make a reality? Need help finishing off a trip you've started planning? Learn everything you need and get a free dinner shouted by the club too! Our trips usually have a trip organiser (who plans where we go, what we do and who the instructors are) and a trip leader (who runs the trip on the day, makes sure no one dies and everyone gets instruction). Anyone can be a trip organiser, no prior knowledge needed and it's not even that hard!  If you're a competent climber, canyoner, caver, kayaker, hiker, mountain biker, orienteer or any other adventure sport afficionado feel free to come along and learn about what is involved as a trip leader too! Bring along a laptop for planning trips on, plenty of ideas and an empty stomach. We will put on a BBQ for attendees. The evening will start from 6pm at the gear shed around the back of the forum https://goo.gl/maps/fTjRbWFBYzw45ZEn7 Without volunteers our trips do not run, so if you have benefited from club trips in the past we'd love it if you considered passing the love along by organising/running a trip!

Wee Jasper
19-05-2023 15:30 – 21-05-2023 20:00
LET’S GO CAVING!!!!! This trip has places for some peeps to come to caving at the Wee Jasper caves, on Ngunnawal country, not far from Canberra. About a 6 hour drive...Yay! When: 19th May, leaving about 4pm on Friday, camping Friday and Saturday night and driving back to Newcastle Sunday evening. There are toilets and hot showers on Saturday night.  What: Now this is the fun part. First, we make our way to the caves which will be a short walk or drive to the cave entrance. Second, we put on our helmets, switch on our torches and dive into the underground world of rock, darkness and awesomeness. Once inside we walk, crawl, slide, and swear our way through the tunnels, trying to see what we can find and where we can get. It’s the ultimate in terms of exploration, the only thing stopping you finding out what’s around the corner or in that tunnel is you. If you are claustrophobic, this is not the trip for you. We're aiming to get a whopping 2 caves done, one on saturday and another on Sunday, as well as a few smaller caves if were lucky.  Skills: These caves are not for the faint of heart, there will be squeezing, there will be squirming! Preferably you have caved before, but as the minimum you are comfortable climbing any Pulse top rope medium and are comfortable in tight spaces. If you are claustrophobic this is NOT the trip for you. There will be vertical caves, so abseiling/rapelling skills are necessary if you want to do these caves. Ascending skills will be taught in situ. What to bring: - Food for two days meaning 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and snacks (you will get hungry). Dinner on Saturday night will be provided as a group camp meal. Friday and Sunday night will be dinner on the road which you can sort out with your driver. You must bring your own breakfast, lunch and snacks. - Water for one day (at least one litre in a sturdy or plastic bottle, each car will have a 10 or 20 litre water container for refills, but you NEED a bottle) - Clean clothes for the car ride home - Camping gear (can be borrowed from the NUMC gear store or BYO) - Torches (can be borrowed or BYO) ***Head torch ESSENTIAL*** - Overalls (optional, limited number and sizes for hire, otherwise old clothes will do) - Spare batteries (Club torches take 4 AAA or 4 AA batteries, you MUST have a complete spare set.) ***ESSENTIAL*** - Backup torch (phones are not allowed in the cave, a $5 hand torch is fine) ***ESSENTIAL*** - Helmets (Gear store) - Sturdy and/or cheap shoes. Following the “they gon’ get dirty” theme. (You get the point by now, there is dirt. Everywhere. Like, EVERYWHERE. And also water. Water and dirt make mud. You get the picture.) - Wet wipes/baby wipes recommended, but there will be a hot shower at camp :)  - Cheap gardening gloves (Also highly recommended) For additional information, send either of us an email or Facebook message. That's all the info you need, so once you've got your ticket, make sure to be at the gear store by 3:30 pm AT THE LATEST on Friday the 19th of May for our departure at 4:00. More details to be released once tickets sold. Camping gear can be borrowed prior, it's a first-in-first-served system.  That's all from us, get keen, sign up, you know the drill. Cheers, Matt M and Chris B
