Mount York
16-02-2024 09:00 – 18-02-2024 17:00
Climbing outdoors can be intimidating, especially as climbing can be such a male dominated activity. That's why we've organised a beginner outdoor climbing weekend for our gals and gender diverse pals (sorry - no boiz allowed). We're heading out to the Blue Mountains for a weekend of touching rock, learning new skills and vibing with awesome people. This trip caters to all skill levels. Outdoor experience is preferred but not required. If you are confident and experienced outdoors, we will facilitate opportunities to lead climb so you can also extend your skills! We supply all the technical equipment and the training you need! What To Bring: - Food - dinner will be provided Friday and Saturday night. You'll need to bring your own food for breakfasts, lunches and snacks. - Water - make sure you can carry at least 2L. - Tent, mat and sleeping bag (these can be borrowed pending availability) - Hat, sunscreen and sun safe clothes - Clothes for 2 adventure days - NOTE Blue Mountains get surprisingly cold overnight. Be prepared for this. Also bring swimmers - there may be a chance to swim on Sunday afternoon after climbing. - Sturdy shoes for the walk in - Hair ties for anyone with long hair.  Please be at the gear store, located near the cul-de-sac around the back of the Forum gym ("Newcastle University Mountaineering Club" on Google maps). We will aim to leave on Friday morning to maximise our time in the mountains. If you cannot leave until Friday night, we may be able to arrange a car to leave later in the day PENDING DRIVER AVAILABILITY. Drivers will be compensated by the club for their fuel.  If you have any conditions that might impact your ability to participate, or if you have any questions you can contact me - Hanna Marie on Facebook, call/text me on 0491120772 or email me at hannaferguson95@hotmail.com. Trip Planning Evening
Newcastle University Mountaineering Club
18:00 – 23:00
Want to learn how to plan and run club trips? Have Ideas for a club trip that you'd love to make a reality? Need help finishing off a trip you've started planning? Learn everything you need and get a free dinner shouted by the club too! Our trips usually have a trip organiser (who plans where we go, what we do and who the instructors are) and a trip leader (who runs the trip on the day, makes sure no one dies and everyone gets instruction). Anyone can be a trip organiser, no prior knowledge needed and it's not even that hard!  If you're a competent climber, canyoner, caver, kayaker, hiker, mountain biker, orienteer or any other adventure sport afficionado feel free to come along and learn about what is involved as a trip leader too! Bring along a laptop for planning trips on, plenty of ideas and an empty stomach. We will put on a BBQ for attendees. The evening will start from 6pm at the gear shed around the back of the forum https://goo.gl/maps/fTjRbWFBYzw45ZEn7 Without volunteers our trips do not run, so if you have benefited from club trips in the past we'd love it if you considered passing the love along by organising/running a trip! If you wanna get involved in trip planning digitally then jump on our trip planning discord!! Join Here!!!

10-11-2023 17:00 – 12-11-2023 19:00
Get keen for an adrenalin-filled, stunningly gorgeous weekend exploring the Blue Mountains' best canyons! Subject to work and uni commitments, the vague plan is to head off from the gearshed around 5pm, arriving at the campsite about 8:30, but carpooling and travel arrangements can be sorted closer to the time. We will be camping at Cathedral Reserve near Mount Wilson Friday and Saturday night before heading back to Newcastle on Sunday evening. Weather dependent, Saturday will be a day of rockhopping and abseiling down some of the best and most beautiful canyons the Blue Mountains has to offer. It will be a big day including swimming, several kilometers of hiking, and some steep terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness and confident swimming ability are both essential! Sunday will be similar, where we roll out of our tents to go canyoning again before heading back to Newy. All camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats etc.) can be hired from the gearstore, in addition to wetsuits, backpacks and drybags. The club will also provide helmets, harnesses and everything you need to stay safe in a canyon! We will be stopping for dinner on the road Friday night on the way to the Blueys, and a delicious, hearty club meal will be provided Saturday night. You will be responsible for providing your own breakfast, lunch, and snacks for Saturday and Sunday (ideally things which are individually wrapped and/or you won't mind eating after they've gone soggy courtesy of a swim in a canyon!) Please keep in mind you will need to make it to the shed on the Tuesday or Wednesday night prior to this trip to organise a wetsuit, and get on those tickets fast! It's first in best dressed and they will go quick! Get keen for an incredible weekend!  - Captain Phil

Beginner Bikepacking
Freemans campground
28-10-2023 08:00 – 29-10-2023 17:00
Love a sore bum and tired legs? Time to try bike packing! (think hiking, but on a bicycle) At dawn we ride! (alternatively 8 am at the gear shed...) This entry level trip will take us from the uni to Munmorah, on the border of the Awabakal and Darkingjung Nations, and back again, with an overnight stay at Freemans Campground, BYO mountain bike. We had hoped to have bikepacking bags sorted by now but instead will have a driver chauffeur all our camping kit to the campsite and will just carry day packs with lunch, etc. If you have your own bags that fit your bike you're welcome to ride with them on! This 50km trip (each way) follows the Fernleigh Track and quiet fire trails most of the way with only a few short sections on the road and a portion of mountain biking through Wallarah.  A reasonable level of fitness is needed, probably about equivalent to being able to do a 4-5 hour hike, and of course you have to be comfy riding a bike as we'll be clocking up a few hours of saddle time (at a gentle pace and with lots of stops). The section through Wallarah is about a blue level so you don't need to be crushing double black diamond jump lines. If you can comfortably do the 10km MTB loop at Glenrock you should be fine. You certainly don't need to be lycra clad but a few things you will need: Mountain bike (I would suggest you leave your huge DH rig at home, but anything with working brakes, gears and suspension will likely do. Remember you're the one who has to suffer on it!) Helmet  Comfy athletic wear to ride in (NO COTTON) Breakfast, snacks (we will stop for lunch at Swansea - supermarket and takeaway optons) and dinner with associated bowls, cutlery, etc to put it in (cook sets can be borrowed from the club) Something warm to wear at night Raincoat Water  Camping gear Optional - change of clothes, towel, swimming attire (there are showers at camp and a beach nearby)   Things the club can lend you (included in ticket price): Tent Sleeping bag Sleeping mat Headtorch Camp fees are included in your ticket price.   Any questions let me know! - Captain Phil

Pulse Climbing
15:00 – 21:00
Pulse ADAMSTOWN PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO RESERVE TWO TICKETS. ONE PER PERSON ONLY! Ticket sales will close at 1pm on the day of.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions we are having to change the way we climb.  For now we have to make sure we do not bring too many people and that we comply with all requests from Pulse staff and the club to ensure everyone's safety. As such we will be splitting those coming to Pulse social climbing nights into two groups of no more than 30 each. Please get your free ticket to book your spot and please only come at the time you have got a ticket for. If there are too many people Pulse may have to ask some to leave so it is imperative that we all stick to our times. Please only get one ticket and be prepared to have to leave at the end of your allotted session if the gym is busy so that new people can come in.  We ask that you do not attend if: You are awaiting a COVID-19 test result You have been in contact with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 in the last 7 days You have or have had ANY infectious disease in the last 7 days (dealing with other illnesses increases the risk of having serious complications from COVID-19) You are immuno-compromised or have contact with anyone who is immuno-compromised I know some of these may sound harsh but if there is even one positive case because of us climbing will be shut down immediately, do not ruin it for the rest of us! Additionally we all need to make sure we continue to: Sanitise our hands between climbs Sanitise carabiners at every change over Do not share personal equipment Cough/sneeze into elbows or preferably a tissue instead of on your hands followed by washing/sanitising the coughed on area immediately Keep 1.5m away from each other Comply with limits to how many people in each area (20 in boulder area, 8 upstairs, etc) - these are all labelled Comply with staff instructions - if you do not you will be asked to leave the gym and possibly the club, this is a serious matter with serious consequences for the safety of individuals, the accountability of the club and Pulse I look forward to seeing 59 other people there, stay safe, have fun and climb well!

21-10-2023 10:00 – 22-10-2023 12:00
This trip will be a weekend long kayaking trip through the beautiful Kuring-Gai National Park, from Saturday the 21st of October to Sunday the 22nd of October. The group will meet at the gear shed at 8 am on Saturday, load up boats and drive to Mooney Mooney on the Central Coast. From there we will kayak for approximately 15km to Marramarra Campsite and stay the night there. Due to the distance a reasonable level of fitness is required, approximately similar to being able to do a 4-5 hour hike. The next day we will kayak back to the cars at Mooney Mooney and drive back to Newcastle, tired, sore and happy! Most of the camping and kayaking gear you need can be hired from the club. You will need to bring your own food and clothing (for both on and off the water). The campsite has woodfire barbecues, and toilets. We will have to carry all our own water. An email with further details will be sent out closer to the date for those who have bought a ticket. Any questions, contact Phillip Tingle at ptin265@aucklanduni.ac.nz
