November Blue Mountains Canyoning
Mount Wilson
01-11-2024 15:00 – 03-11-2024 17:00
The frigid hands of the Blue Mountains winter have finally started to release their grasp from our precious Wollangambe, which can only mean one thing… CANYONING TRIP!!!!!
This trip is going to be awesome fun, but for that to happen, you MUST have abseiling experience before attending. BUT, don't fret if you don't have any! When you buy your ticket, just let us know in the relevant question and we'll make a groupchat where we can organize a practice session to show you the ropes (haha).
Subject to work and uni commitments, the vague plan is to head off from the gearshed around 5pm, arriving at the campsite about 8:30pm, but carpooling and travel arrangements can be sorted closer to the time.
We will be camping at Cathedral Reserve near Mount Wilson Friday and Saturday night before heading back to Newcastle on Sunday evening.
Weather dependent, Saturday will be a day of rock hopping and abseiling down some of the best and most beautiful canyons the Blue Mountains has to offer. It will be a big day including swimming, several kilometers of hiking, and some steep terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness and confident swimming ability are both essential!
Sunday will be a nice relaxed day of floating, jumping, sunbathing and more canyoning if we’re up to it. Instead of taking ropes and harnesses, we'll take our lovely lilos down to the Wollangambe and spend the day drifting away in the sunshine.
All camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats etc.) can be hired from the gearstore, in addition to wetsuits, backpacks and drybags. The club will also provide helmets, harnesses and everything you need to stay safe in a canyon!
We will be stopping for dinner on the road Friday night on the way to the Blueys, and a delicious, hearty (not too spicy) dinner will be provided Saturday night. You will be responsible for providing your own breakfast, lunch, and snacks for Saturday and Sunday (ideally things which are individually wrapped and/or you won't mind eating after they've gone soggy courtesy of a swim in a canyon!)
Please keep in mind you will need to make it to the shed sometime during the week prior to this trip to organise a wetsuit, and get on those tickets fast!
You know the drill, get keen and set your alarms. I’ll see you all there!

Annual General Meeting 2024
17:30 – 19:00
Our 2024 AGM will be held at the Callaghan campus (Forum Meeting Room*) on Tuesday the 15th. The AGM itself will be held from 5:30-6:30pm. The actual meeting should only take about 15-20 minutes but we'll be throwing on a free BBQ down at the shed as well!
We have received some interest for committee positions, but will continue to accept nominations until midnight Monday 14th. Any positions that remain vacant as of then will be open to nomination at the event. So grab your (free) ticket from tidyHQ so we can get a firm idea of numbers.
Reasons to nominate for committee:
- Implement ideas you've had for the club
- Learning admin and leadership skills
- Open access to the gear store
- In house training in outdoor adventure sports
- Help give back to the club so others can have the opportunity to gain something too
- Altruism
- Looks great on your CV.
Role descriptions and nomination forms are available on the club facebook page or by request. Any questions can be sent to myself or committee@numc.org.au. Our committees are run in a very fluid way, each member gets to learn every job, so your learning will not be confined to any single aspect of club administration. You will learn both the administrative skills of how to plan a trip, as well as the technical skills required to implement one.
Nominate for any position you feel you would like to learn, or be good at. You may nominate for more than one.
We'd love to have some new committee members, we have so much to teach and share so that this great club can thrive for years to come!
*The Forum meeting room is the first door on the right when you enter the Forum at Callaghan next to the cafe.

Overnight Kayaking 2024
12-10-2024 08:00 – 13-10-2024 15:00
This trip will be a weekend long kayaking trip through the beautiful Myall Lakes National Park, from Saturday the 12th of October to Sunday the 13th of October.
The group will meet at the gear shed at 8 am on Saturday, load up boats and drive to Bombah Point to put boats on the water.
From there we will kayak for approximately 15km to Johnson's Beach Campsite and stay the night there. Due to the distance a reasonable level of fitness is required, approximately similar to being able to do a 4-5 hour hike.
The next day we will kayak back to the cars at Bombah Point and drive back to Newcastle, tired, sore and happy!
Most of the camping and kayaking gear you need can be hired from the club. You will need to bring your own food and clothing (for both on and off the water).
The campsite has drop toilets and no other facilities. We will have to carry all our own water.
An email with further details will be sent out closer to the date for those who have bought a ticket.
Any questions, contact Phillip Tingle at ptin265@aucklanduni.ac.nz

Bungonia Intermediate Caving
11-10-2024 15:00 – 13-10-2024 15:00
LET’S GO CAVING!!!!!
This trip has places for some peeps to come caving at the Bungonia caves, on Ngunnawal country, not far from Goulburn. About a 4 hour drive...Yay!
When: October 11th, leaving about 4pm on Friday, camping Friday and Saturday night and driving back to Newcastle Sunday afternoon.
What: Now this is the fun part. First, we make our way to the caves which will be a short walk or drive to the cave entrance. Second, we put on our helmets, switch on our torches and dive into the underground world of rock, darkness and awesomeness. Once inside we walk, crawl, slide, and swear our way through the tunnels, trying to see what we can find and where we can get. It’s the ultimate in terms of exploration, the only thing stopping you finding out what’s around the corner or in that tunnel is you. If you are claustrophobic, this is not the trip for you. We're aiming to get a whopping 2 caves done, one on Saturday and another on Sunday.
Skills: These caves are not for the faint of heart, there will be squeezing, there will be squirming! You will NEED to have either attended one of the NUMC Rope Skills days (another will be coming soon) or previously shown that you are capable at abseiling and ascending.
If you have any questions, send either of us a Facebook message.
That's all the info you need right now, so once you've got your ticket, make sure to be at the gear store by 3:00 pm AT THE LATEST on Friday the 11th of October for our departure at 3:30pm. More details to be released once tickets sold.
Camping gear can be borrowed prior, it's a first-in-first-served system.
That's all from us, get keen, sign up, you know the drill.
Cheers,
Matt Moss and Chris Brown
