Dharug Country (Blue Mountains)
13-12-2024 09:00 – 15-12-2024 17:00
Yehaw Gals and Gender Diverse Pals we have a climbing weekend in the Blue Mountains just for us! (No boiz allowed in the tree house) We want to improve diversity in the outdoor climbing community so we're here to facilitate feeling confident and competent with the ropes. This is for beginners and intermediate climbers wanting to upskill and VIBE with a supportive tribe. There will be a variety of grades and opportunity to lead if you wish as the Blueys has something for everyone. Experience is not required (but there's only one way to get experience!)   What To Bring: - Food - dinner will be provided Saturday night. You'll need to bring your own food for breakfasts, lunches and snacks. - Water - make sure you can carry at least 2L. - Tent, mat and sleeping bag (these can be borrowed from the club pending availability) - Hat, sunscreen and sun safe clothes - Clothes for 2 adventure days - NOTE the Blue Mountains get surprisingly cold overnight. Be prepared for this. Also bring swimmers - there may be a chance to swim on Sunday afternoon after climbing. - Sturdy shoes for the walk in - Hair ties for anyone with long hair.  Please be at the gear store, located near the cul-de-sac around the back of the Forum gym ("Newcastle University Mountaineering Club" on Google maps). We will leave Friday night to maximise our time in the mountains. Drivers will be compensated by the club for their fuel.    If you have any conditions that may impact your ability to participate, or if you have any questions feel free to reach out - Kirra Lee on Facebook, call/text: 0434 731 852 or email: kirracrouch@outlook.com Looking forward to a wonderful weekend ticking climbs!

Lane Cove River Rogaine
North Head and Sydney Harbour National Park
08:00 – 18:00
Rogaine, anyone? If you've ever heard of orienteering, rogaining is similar. It involves navigation and route-finding, but instead of trying to be the fastest on a set course, rogaining is a race to win as many points as possible within a set time. This rogaine is 6-hour rogaine in North Head at Manly and involves lots of navigation, strategy and route-finding, as well as lovely bush scenery and historic sites. There may even be the potential for a swim. Teams comprise between 2 and 5 people. If we get more than 5 people, we'll have a meeting beforehand to see if we can organise teams. If you've got any team preferences, let me know. Entries and ticket sales close on the 17th of November. Prices through NSW Rogaining are: Concession: $32, Adult: $45. I can register and pay for teams if you pay me back afterwards :) Let me know if you are not concession, I'll assume everyone is a student. Details are here: https://nswrogaining.org/2024-socialgaine/ For anyone new to rogaining read this: https://nswrogaining.org/novices/ . It'll make your life easier. Let me know by email if you are not a novice. (Novice teams get their own special awards category) You will need: A compass A comfortable day pack Comfortable and durable active wear - loose, long-sleeved Comfortable shoes 2 litres of water Energy dense food that will keep you going for 6 hours! Torch Small First Aid Kit Swimmers, if you're feeling keen Each team should travel to and from the event in a separate car. Here's the approximate timings: 6:00am Meet at Gear Shed 6:10am Leave Gear Shed 8:30am(ish) Arrive at Manly, plan route attend novice briefing 10:00am Rogaine starts 16:00pm Rogaine ends 17:00pm Leave Manly after awards presentations 19:30pm(ish) Arrive at Gear Shed Any questions, email Samuel: samuel@sjf.id.au

November Blue Mountains Canyoning
Mount Wilson
01-11-2024 15:00 – 03-11-2024 17:00
The frigid hands of the Blue Mountains winter have finally started to release their grasp from our precious Wollangambe, which can only mean one thing… CANYONING TRIP!!!!! This trip is going to be awesome fun, but for that to happen, you MUST have abseiling experience before attending. BUT, don't fret if you don't have any! When you buy your ticket, just let us know in the relevant question and we'll make a groupchat where we can organize a practice session to show you the ropes (haha). Subject to work and uni commitments, the vague plan is to head off from the gearshed around 5pm, arriving at the campsite about 8:30pm, but carpooling and travel arrangements can be sorted closer to the time. We will be camping at Cathedral Reserve near Mount Wilson Friday and Saturday night before heading back to Newcastle on Sunday evening. Weather dependent, Saturday will be a day of rock hopping and abseiling down some of the best and most beautiful canyons the Blue Mountains has to offer. It will be a big day including swimming, several kilometers of hiking, and some steep terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness and confident swimming ability are both essential! Sunday will be a nice relaxed day of floating, jumping, sunbathing and more canyoning if we’re up to it. Instead of taking ropes and harnesses, we'll take our lovely lilos down to the Wollangambe and spend the day drifting away in the sunshine.  All camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats etc.) can be hired from the gearstore, in addition to wetsuits, backpacks and drybags. The club will also provide helmets, harnesses and everything you need to stay safe in a canyon! We will be stopping for dinner on the road Friday night on the way to the Blueys, and a delicious, hearty (not too spicy) dinner will be provided Saturday night. You will be responsible for providing your own breakfast, lunch, and snacks for Saturday and Sunday (ideally things which are individually wrapped and/or you won't mind eating after they've gone soggy courtesy of a swim in a canyon!) Please keep in mind you will need to make it to the shed sometime during the week prior to this trip to organise a wetsuit, and get on those tickets fast!  You know the drill, get keen and set your alarms. I’ll see you all there!  - Chris

Annual General Meeting 2024
17:30 – 19:00
Our 2024 AGM will be held at the Callaghan campus (Forum Meeting Room*) on Tuesday the 15th. The AGM itself will be held from 5:30-6:30pm. The actual meeting should only take about 15-20 minutes but we'll be throwing on a free BBQ down at the shed as well! We have received some interest for committee positions, but will continue to accept nominations until midnight Monday 14th. Any positions that remain vacant as of then will be open to nomination at the event. So grab your (free) ticket from tidyHQ so we can get a firm idea of numbers.  Reasons to nominate for committee: - Implement ideas you've had for the club - Learning admin and leadership skills - Open access to the gear store - In house training in outdoor adventure sports - Help give back to the club so others can have the opportunity to gain something too - Altruism - Looks great on your CV. Role descriptions and nomination forms are available on the club facebook page or by request. Any questions can be sent to myself or committee@numc.org.au. Our committees are run in a very fluid way, each member gets to learn every job, so your learning will not be confined to any single aspect of club administration. You will learn both the administrative skills of how to plan a trip, as well as the technical skills required to implement one. Nominate for any position you feel you would like to learn, or be good at. You may nominate for more than one. We'd love to have some new committee members, we have so much to teach and share so that this great club can thrive for years to come! *The Forum meeting room is the first door on the right when you enter the Forum at Callaghan next to the cafe.
